ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (www.eratosthenes.org.cy) of Cyprus University of Technology (www.cut.ac.cy) invites applications for one (1) position at the Researcher A’ level. The positions are open either on a full-time (100%) or part-time employment basis. The successful candidates will conduct research and develop products under multiple ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence projects funded by the European Union, including the flagship Excelsior H2020 Teaming project (https://excelsior2020.eu/).

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in earth observation, space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has more than 17-years experience in earth observations and geospatial analysis. Through the “EXCELSIOR” H2020 Teaming Project (https://excelsior2020.eu/), ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus’ development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.

Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre’s strategic growth plan and sustainability targets. These will be revised periodically by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.

Description of the Position

This position concerns researchers with a PhD degree who will manage and/or coordinate projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates are expected to contribute towards shaping and advancing its research and innovation agenda by:

• Conduct applied or fundamental research and publish the results in high-quality conferences and journals;
• Participation and/or organisation of trainings;
• Participation in the preparation and submission of projects’ deliverables;
• Assisting in the definition of research goals and writing research proposals with the supervision of the Coordinator of the relevant Department;
• Assisting in the establishment of local, regional, and international research networks that can support the long-term research agenda and priorities of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence;
• Engaging with government and industry bodies and institutions to raise the profile of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence as a research-intensive institution;
• Contributing towards securing financial and other resources from national, regional and international sources;
• Working towards fulfilling ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence mission goals;
• Ensuring that the KPIs and other performance targets as set by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence are met;
• Undertaking any other relevant duties deemed necessary.

Qualifications

• PhD in relevant subject, for example: Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering;
• Experience in leading and managing substantial research funding from national and international agencies, including the European Commission;
• Comprehensive project planning; identifying and managing risks in project implementation;
• Effective collaborative and communication skills with stakeholders from both the research community and the industry;
• Robust history of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international scientific conferences;
• Strong computer programming skills are a must;
• Usage of Machine Learning and Deep Learning libraries are a must;
• Previous leading research experience will be considered an advantage.

Ideal candidate profile:
The candidate’s profile should include:

• Εxpertise in Multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, SAR, LiDAR etc sensors and (satellite, aerial, ground and underwater) platforms/systems.
• Acquisition and processing of remote sensing imagery emphasising in methods and techniques for various applications like change detection, modeling of phenomena, risk assessment for natural hazards and the protection of the natural environment.
• Development of algorithms and methods for the analysis of remote sensing imagery as well as their integration with GIS.
• Processing multispectral/ hyperspectral and other remote sensing imagery using machine/ deep learning techniques, object-based image analysis and their integration.
• Experienced in cloud computing and the development of WebGIS applications.

Minimum Requirements for the post of Researcher A’

This position concerns researchers at the level of Researcher A’ who holds a postgraduate (PhD) degree with at least 10 years of independent research experience, demonstrating significant contributions to acquisition/preprocessing of hyperspectral and thermal imagery, and data analysis in various scientific domains.

The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal for another six months. All appointments are subject to completion of a probation period of six (6) months. The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position will range from €64330.53 to €66770.90, depending on qualifications. It is noted that there is provision for 13^th salary (the cost of the 13^th salary is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration).
