Over the past 35 years, more than 500 students from 35 countries have benefitted from a Canon Foundation in Europe grant. With the philosophy of kyosei as its compass – “living and working together for the common good” – research grants are offered annually to Europeans and Japanese nationals.
Our Programmes
We offer Research Fellowships where European and Japanese receive grants to carry out research in Japan and Europe respectively. Grants are offered for research in all fields. Applicants should have obtained at least their Master’s degree within the last 10 years. Non-nationals should have permanent citizenship in either Europe or Japan. Grants are awarded for 3 months minimum to 1 year maximum.
Application deadline 15 September 2022 for applications starting from January 2023.
The Japan-Africa Exchange Programme with Kyoto University offers grants to scholars from Kyoto University who want to do research in Africa related to African Studies, and for scholars from Kyoto University’s partner institutes in Africa who want to do research in Kyoto. Application deadline 15 November 2022 for applications starting between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024.
Co-sponsored Fellowships-European University Institute are for Japanese nationals who want to carry out post-doctoral research at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. The successful candidate will participate in the Max Weber programme at the Institute.
